Black Mold Removal in Fort Myers, FL
“Black mold” usually means Stachybotrys chartarum, a slimy, dark green-black mold that grows on drywall and wood that stay wet for a long time. Here is how to tell what you have and how to get rid of it safely.
- Many molds look black. Only a lab test can tell you if it’s Stachybotrys.
- The CDC says treat all mold the same, whatever its color: remove it and fix the moisture.
- Areas larger than about 10 sq ft should be handled by a licensed remediator (EPA guidance; Florida licensing).
- Don’t scrub or sand it dry. That releases spores into the air.
What is black mold?
Stachybotrys chartarum needs materials that stay wet for days or weeks, especially cellulose-rich materials like drywall paper, ceiling tiles and wood. That’s why it usually means a long-running leak, flooding or a moisture problem inside a wall.
Plenty of other common molds are dark, too, such as Cladosporium and Aspergillus. Looks alone won’t tell you which one you have.
Is black mold dangerous?
Any mold can cause problems for some people. According to the CDC, common reactions include stuffy nose, wheezing, red or itchy eyes and skin irritation. People with allergies, asthma or weakened immune systems can react more strongly.
Headlines about “toxic black mold” overstate what’s proven, but the CDC’s advice is simple: you don’t need to know the type. If mold is growing in your home, remove it and fix the moisture behind it.
If someone in the home has symptoms you think are linked to mold, talk to a doctor. A mold professional can find and remove the mold, but can’t give medical advice.

How to tell if it’s black mold
| Clue | What it suggests |
|---|---|
| Slimy, wet look; dark green to black | Often Stachybotrys, which grows on materials that stay wet |
| Powdery, gray-black spots on a shower or window sill | Usually surface mildew or another common mold |
| Musty smell with no visible mold | Hidden growth, possibly inside a wall or the AC |
| Lab result | The only way to know for sure |
If you need certainty for a home sale, insurance claim or health reasons, mold testing gives a lab-confirmed answer.
How black mold is removed safely
- Find and fix the water source. Without this, mold returns.
- Contain the area with plastic sheeting and negative air pressure.
- Filter the air with HEPA air scrubbers during the work.
- Remove damaged porous materials like drywall and insulation, then bag them before carrying them out.
- HEPA-vacuum and clean framing and solid surfaces.
- Dry the area to normal moisture levels.
- Clearance testing to confirm the area is clean before rebuilding.
Can you remove black mold yourself?
For a small area (under about 10 square feet) on a hard surface, the EPA says many homeowners can clean it themselves with detergent and water, wearing an N-95 respirator, gloves and goggles. Dry the area fully afterward.
Call a professional when the area is larger, mold is inside walls or the AC, the water damage came from sewage or flood water, or anyone in the home has health concerns. In Florida, remediation over 10 square feet must be done by a licensed mold remediator.
Black mold removal cost
Most mold remediation jobs in our area cost about $1,200 to $3,750, or roughly $10 to $25 per square foot, depending on how much material needs removing. Black mold jobs often sit in the upper part of that range because they usually involve wall cavities. See full cost guide or use the cost estimator.

Frequently asked questions
Is all black mold toxic?
No. Many dark-colored molds are common and not Stachybotrys. The CDC advises treating all indoor mold the same way: remove it and fix the moisture problem.
Can bleach kill black mold?
Bleach can lighten surface mold, but it doesn’t reach mold growing inside porous materials like drywall. The EPA does not recommend bleach as a routine mold cleaner.
Should I leave the house if I find black mold?
For a small spot, usually not. For large growth, or if anyone in the home has asthma, allergies or a weak immune system, limiting time in the affected area until it’s removed is wise.
Will black mold come back after removal?
Not if the moisture source is fixed and the area is dried properly. Recurring mold almost always means the water problem wasn’t solved.
How long does black mold removal take?
Small jobs take one to two days. Larger jobs with wall removal and drying often take three to five days, plus time for clearance testing.
